Do I need to be an experienced diver?

Open Water with solid buoyancy is enough for most programs. Some restoration work wants Advanced. What matters is that you can hold position without touching anything.

Is this a real contribution or a photo op?

Ask where the data goes. Reef Check, CoralWatch, and university programs publish it. If the operator cannot name a partner or a dataset, treat it as an eco-themed dive week.

Will I still get good diving?

Yes. Survey sites are chosen because they are healthy or recovering, and afternoons are usually free dives on the same reefs. Expect fewer total dives than a dive-focused trip.

Conservation and Education Dive Trips

You want to come back knowing more than when you left: how to ID the fish you saw, why that reef is bleaching, how to lay a transect, what a coral nursery looks like. And you want the diving to count for something.
